mental & emotional habits to help you live a more satisfying life.
What's the background?
From Jana Basili, program founder:
“In 2004, I was accepted into Stanford Business School’s group facilitation program, where I learned to lead their world-famous Interpersonal Dynamics course (fondly called “Touchy Feely” by students). My husband had been a student there and I knew what an incredible opportunity that was.
The course is based on an experiential learning modality called T-group (T is for Training) that was developed by NTL Institute and later modified by Stanford to focus on developing targeted skills in executives, leaders and emerging leaders.
Since 2004 I’ve facilitated, coached and participated in over 70 T-groups, from 3 days to 10 weeks in duration. I’ve also enjoyed bringing modified T-group based learning and dialogue into organizations, as well as finding other ways to make it unique—such as founding “T-groups for Women” in 2019.
While I love every aspect of my coaching and EQ-training career, facilitating T-groups remains a favorite. To see people transform before my very eyes — and to be moved and changed myself in each of these occasions — is profound.
When Covid-19 led me to cancel my next 2020 “T-groups for Women” weekend, I was profoundly disappointed. People asked when I’d bring T-groups online. While I’ve been honored to help Stanford deliver their virtual T-group courses, the screen fatigue led me to consider new training options. Lengthy virtual workshops had also became uncomfortable during the Covid lockdown, without my normal routine of exercise and physical care.
Enter Positive Intelligence, aka “PQ”.
PQ was created by Shirzad Chamine, a Stanford lecturer, Silicon Valley entrepreneur, and past president of the Coaches Training Institute. His PQ program was inspired in part by his own participation in “Touchy Feely” when he was a Stanford MBA student. When I took his PQ course at the encouragement of a colleague, I definitely felt those roots running throughout the experience..
Despite 2 decades of experiential personal development, I was shocked how much my self-awareness and EQ skills grew in those 6 weeks! I knew right away that PQ could offer a way for me to deliver a powerful personal development experience to my own coaching and workshop clients. And, that it could provide a way for people to internalize many of the "Self" and the "Relationship" EQ skills they are seeking when they join a traditional T-group workshop or class.
I’m so excited to combine PQ with all my T-group experiences (at Stanford and beyond), to help participants grow and challenge themselves with the intimacy, authenticity and experiential elements of T-group — in very manageable time chunks — and all in a virtual format!“

What does PQ have to do with EQ?
Participants of the Positive Intelligence (PQ) program develop skills in all four quadrants of EQ.
This is because PQ helps you strengthen core EQ muscles:
Self-awareness
- Increase awareness of thoughts and feelings that are driving your actions
Self-management
- Increase the ability to shift those thoughts and feelings with intention
Harness your Best Self (your Sage or Inner Wisdom) in any situation
- Notice what is happening and what is needed.
- Then, access your authentic creativity, empathy, empowered problem-solving, values-aligned choices and confident, focused action.
Decrease the power of your inner Judge and Saboteurs
- Your Inner Judge harms EQ because it's focused on criticism, blame, fault-finding, belittling and diminishing yourself and those around you.
- Your Inner Saboteurs harm EQ in more personalized ways. They're described in the next section.

How do the 9 "Saboteurs" impact my EQ?
As described above, your Inner Saboteurs harm Individual and Team EQ in very individualized ways. For example:
These are only examples. Your own version of these Saboteurs might have a different manifestation and different impact on yourself and others.
It's also important to note that these "Saboteurs" are not YOU! They also have their origins in very worthy values and intentions. Discerning whether a thought, feeling or behavior is being driven by wisdom or being driven by sabotage —and what to do about it — is a huge benefit of this program.
- Avoider - avoids uncomfortable conversations. This paralysis escalates problems in relationships and causes growing stress and anxiety about the avoided issue.
- Controller - feels responsibility to take charge or see everything done the "best" (their) way. This discourages and disempowers others, or leaves them out completely. Challenged with delegation, the controller often feels alone and overburdened, leading to further anger, resentment or impatience.
- Hyper-Achiever - can't rest on a job well done, which exhausts self and others. Also, an unrelenting task focus means they can alienate or take for granted important relationships.
- Hyper-Rational - a singular focus on logic and rationality is costly to relationships, because others don't receive needed understanding or empathy. Important stakeholders, company or community values can also be ignored.
- Hyper-Vigilant - worry about what might go wrong takes this person out of the moment and into an anxious swirl. Performance is compromised, and others feel stressed or burdened by this. Others also learn to discount one's spoken concerns, which means the ability to influence people when it actually matters is lost over time.
- Pleaser - has a hard time speaking the truth or advocating for their needs (or the needs of their team), out of a desire to not upset others. This prevents honest conversations and leads to resentment and lack of authenticity, trust, relationship depth and collaboration.
- Restless - an oversized need for fun and excitement can get in the way of deeper relationships and sustained work on personal or professional goals.
- Stickler - perfectionism applied to everything—important or not—causes unnecessary stress. It also derails productivity and discourages others, who can never do a good enough job and often feel criticized.
- Victim - may feel overwhelmed, helpless or resigned. Negative feelings hinder productive conflict resolution, productive dialogue and internal motivation.
These are only examples. Your own version of these Saboteurs might have a different manifestation and different impact on yourself and others.
